I never knew being a disciple of Jesus could feel this hard.

I’ve read my Bible. I know Jesus faced opposition. The Pharisees questioned Him, people rejected Him, and those who carried His message faced resistance too. Still, somewhere in my heart, I thought the hardest rejection of His ways would come from the world.

What has caught me off guard is how painful it can be when the pressure comes from people inside the house of God.

There are moments when I find myself asking, Where is the integrity? Where is the compassion? Where is the desire to live what we say we believe? I don’t ask because I think I’m better than anyone. I ask because I care about God’s heart, and seeing the gap between what we preach and how we treat people makes me sad.

It can make you feel like you have to lower the standard just to fit in. Like you have to stay quiet about what is right, excuse what hurts people, or become comfortable with what God has been calling you away from.

But I can’t lower the standard God is teaching me to live by just because someone else is comfortable doing so. His standard also calls me to humility, truth, mercy, and love. I need His grace every day too.

When this weighs on me, I pray. I run to my Father. I ask Him to keep my heart soft, because disappointment can harden a person if they carry it alone. I ask Him to help me recognize what is wrong without letting bitterness take root in me.

Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. He did call us to follow Him faithfully. So even when I’m weary, I want my life to reflect the One I say I serve. I want to hold on to the kingdom standard, especially when it costs me something.

If you’ve felt this too, take your sadness to God. Let Him strengthen you. Let Him search your heart as you ask Him to heal what you’ve seen. You don’t have to lower what He has placed in you to belong.
