I’m the type of person who wants relationships to last forever. When I love and care about someone, I never imagine that there will come a time when we are no longer close. But I’m beginning to realize that, in some cases, relationships simply do not last forever—and that is okay.
I have childhood friends whom I only talk to every blue moon. Some of them I only speak to in passing when I visit home. I have also had friendships from my adulthood that ended without me fully understanding what happened. Some relationships ended because I wasn’t willing to withhold the truth, while others ended because of betrayal.
Regardless of how they ended, I’m learning that some of those endings were actually for my good. People grow and change. What worked during one season of our lives may no longer work in the next one. Sometimes God allows people to grow apart because where He is taking us requires something different.
One thing I can honestly say is that I don’t carry anger, bitterness, or animosity toward anyone. No matter where we may stand today, I have peace in my heart—and that is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
I know that if I see someone I’m no longer close to, I can still speak to them, and it will be genuine. I don’t have to pretend that the hurt never happened, but I also don’t have to carry it with me.
Some relationships last a lifetime, while others only last for a season. Either way, I can appreciate what they taught me, release what no longer belongs in my life, and continue moving forward with a peaceful heart.
